PM must address Haryana rapes in ‘Mann ki Baat’: Congress

Uncategorized

The law and order situation in Haryana is in a dismal state. It is indeed looking like the rape capital of the country, Congress stated while demanding the resignation of Manohar Lal Khattar

As the spate of rapes continue unabated in Haryana, the Congress today again demanded for President’s rule to be imposed in the state. They have asked the Prime Minister to address the issue through his “Mann ki Baat”.

“The law and order situation in Haryana is in a dismal state. It is indeed looking like the rape capital of the country. What is shocking is the attitude of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and the additional director general of police RC Mishra. The chief minister is focussed on making political statements and playing political games instead of preventing such crimes,” pointed out Sushmita Dev, Congress MP.

The families of the rape victims have been demanding for a free and fair trial. The Congress legislators, Kiran Choudhary, Kumari Selja and Dev, at a press conference, said that the government cannot relegate the issue to one-time payment of Rs four lakh and wash their hands off the matter. “In the Kurukshetra gang rape case, it was a bright young girl who had died. She was someone who had scored 95 per cent in school. The parents were hoping that she would grow up and be employed. The girl is someone who had promise. The government should give a permanent job to a provider in the family,” added Dev.

On January 13, a 15-year-old girl’s mutilated, half-naked body was found from near the bank of a canal in Jind district, after she had gone missing on January 9 from her village in Kurukshetra district.

“Why is the Prime Minister silent on the issue. He should take it up in his ‘Mann ki Baat’. He should mention what steps have been taken to increase the safety of women, what targets have been given to the Haryana CM. The people of the country need to know. They are the party which coined ‘Beti Bachao, Beti padhao. It is nothing but another ‘jumla’,” questioned Dev.

In Haryana, 10 rapes happen in 12 days; it is a state where a rape happens every eight hours. “It is a grave situation. The Chief Minister is the Home Minister, so it is his direct responsibility. Instead there are police officers like Mishra who has trivialised the who issue by stating that such incidents keep on happening. This is the mindset. Mishra should be replaced,” demanded Dev.

“Every year, crime against women have been on the rise since 2014. These are the cases that are being reported, but what about those that go unreported. It is about the law and order situation in the state. We don’t think the government is serious about women’s safety,” elaborated Selja, while demanding the resignation of Khattar.

Khattar had mentioned in his election campaign that crimes against women would be taken seriously. They had stated that they would install CCTV cameras for the security of women, teach self-defence techniques to them and that heinous crimes against women would be taken seriously. “When the Nirbhaya case had happened, the BJP leadership had demanded the resignation of Manmohan Singh and the Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit. Now, what happened,” questioned Dev.

“There is no sensitivity at all in such cases. The police officers are saying such crimes are normal. They know they won’t be punished. Why is there an elected government if they can’t do their job? We won’t let the Vidhan Sabha function. It is a question of our daughters. All of Haryana should know that the government isn’t acting,” pointed out Kiran Choudhary, a Congress MLA from Tosham.

A delegation of Congress leaders had met Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki on Wednesday to demand that the current government led by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar be asked to resign and the imposition of President’s Rule in the state
