To paraphrase an old adage, there are no permanent friends or enemies in politics, only permanent interests. That was perhaps the underlying message that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sought to send across as she met Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and his son Aditya in Mumbai today.
The Thackerays are the old-time allies of the BJP, and currently rule over Maharashtra, where their Shiv Sena has been reduced to a junior partner. Recently, the Sena has not been on good terms with the BJP, and is believed to be eyeing political alliances outside the saffron party.
Mamata, who is in Mumbai since Tuesday, met the Thackerays at a hotel in south Mumbai. No statement from their parties on what transpired in the meeting has come out.
