Flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall for more than 24 hours beginning Friday inflicted havoc in different parts of Tripura, forcing nearly 4,000 families to seek shelter at relief camps.

According to Tripura State Disaster Management’s report on Sunday, the number of flood-affected families in the latest floods is 3,968. The flood-affected people are staying across 54 relief camps.

Nearly 120 houses were submerged fully or partially and huge tracts of farm land were destroyed in the flash floods, according to state disaster management report.

Floods hit several low-lying parts of Agartala and the outskirts of West Tripura, Khowai, and Gomati districts and forced people to abandon their homes on Saturday.

A total of 157mm rainfall was recorded since Friday, according to the meteorological department records. The rain subsided on Sunday, but flooding continued in several parts.

State revenue minister Badal Choudhury and transport minister Manik Dey visited some flood-hit areas on Saturday.

Tripura was battered by floods in August too, when more than 2,000 families were forced to seek refuge in relief camps.
