Opening Film ‘Afterimage’ Portrays Complex Relationship between Power and Art: Michal Kweicinski

New Delhi: The passionate biopic ‘AfterImage’ a film directed by the legendary Polish Director Andrzej Wajda, portrays the complex relationship between Power and Art. The film does not ask questions, but puts out questions and compels people to contemplate on the issues involved. This was stated by the Producer of the film Michal Kwiecinski, while briefing the media in Goa today. He said that ‘AfterImage’ is a very special film for the whole Polish film community. The storyline of the film is based on the contemporary history of Poland and the cast and crew of the film is curious to know the response of the Indian audience, as the connect will prove the universal theme of relationship between the power, art and the artist, he added.

In response to a question by media, Ms. Grazyna Gradon, Editor of the film, said that Andrzej Wajda was involved in every aspect of the film: shooting, editing and sound designing and was very happy at the completion of the film. His age did not affect his direction of the film in any way, added the Editor.

Costume designer of the film, Ms. Katarzyna Lewinska , informed that Andrzej Wajda was the best partner to work with and once he was convinced of the capabilities and potential of his co-worker, he gave him/her absolute freedom.

The eminent crew of the movie: Michal Kwiecinski (Producer), Grazyna Gradon (Editor), Maria Chilarecka (Sound Design), Kacper Habisiak & Marcin Kasinski (Audio engineers) and Katarzyna Lewinska (Costume designer) addressed the  press and interacted with media in Goa today.

The film based on the life of late Polish painter, Wladyslaw Strzeminski is the last masterpiece by Director Andrzej Wajda. The deserving winner of an honorary Oscar, in 2000, Wajda passed away last month at the age of 90. He sealed his legacy with this captivating biopic ‘Afterimage’. The film is slated to open the 47th International Film Festival tomorrow.

‘AfterImage’ is the official entry form Poland for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards. It was also screened in the Masters section at the Toronto International Film Festival.

IFFI 2016, under a special initiative is also screening 5 masterpieces (Katyn, Ashes and Diamonds, Man of Iron, The Maids of Wilko and The Promised Land) of the eminent Director as a special tribute to honour his illustrious career spanning 60 years.

Strzeminski, the protagonist of the film is a Professor at National School of Fine Arts at Lodz. Despite the different opinions of the University Authorities and the Ministry of Culture, his students treat him like “The Messiah of Modern Painting” and support him by visiting for private lectures even though he is expelled from the University and Artists’ Union for not complying with the Party Regulations. Strzeminski, impaired due to a missing arm and leg falls prey to poverty and poor health as the Communist Authorities persist in harassing him.

Late writer and director Andrzej Wajda was one of the most prominent filmmakers in the world, who is remembered for his trilogy of war films: A Generation (1954), Kanal (1956) and Ashes and Diamonds (1958).
