At least one person died and eight were trapped after a three-story residential building collapsed in Bhiwandi city in Thane district of Maharashtra on Friday, the Hindustan Times reported. “The incident happened at 9 am, and we have rushed help to the spot immediately,” Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation Public Relations Officer Sunil Zhalke told the daily.
The Thane Municipal Corporation’s disaster control department has sent rescue teams, and one fire brigade team has been deployed too. Bhiwandi municipal corporation’s Acting Commissioner Ashok Rankhamb said five people had been rescued and taken to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Bhiwandi.
The building, Tahir Bijnori, was located at KG Nagar, Navi Basti, in the interiors of Bhiwandi and was not easily accessible. Zhalke said the structure was just seven years old and that municipal officials were examining whether it was on the list of dangerous buildings.
In 2016, four buildings had collapsed in Bhiwandi during the monsoon, the Hindustan Times said.
