With Delhi being one of the host cities for FIFA Under-17 Wold Cup at Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium, commuters travelling through the area in south Delhi may have to face traffic jams and restrictions on four days over the next fortnight. (FIFA U-17 World Cup SCHEDULE | NEWS)
Delhi is one of the six Indian cities hosting the World Cup. The matches here will be held on October 6, 9, 12 and 16.
“We will put restrictions on vehicle movement around the stadium. Motorists are advised to avoid those routes from 2pm on those four days,” said Garima Bhatnagar, Delhi Police joint commissioner for traffic.
A detailed briefing on the restrictions and arrangements will be held after the traffic police conduct a rehearsal.
Sharing details of basic arrangements, Bhatnagar said only vehicles with authorised labels will be allowed on the roads leading to the stadium. “No heavy commercial vehicles will be allowed anywhere close to the stadium,” she said.
Some of the roads likely to be affected are the Lodhi Road, Lala Lajpat Rai Road and a stretch of Aurobindo Marg, the officer said, adding that alternate routes will be communicated to the motorists soon.
However, Bhatnagar said, there would be no noticeable restrictions for the public on the routes taken by footballers from their hotel to the stadium or vice-versa.
Around 20,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been tasked with ensuring that the sporting event in Delhi goes off without any security scare.
“Thousands of armed personnel will be deployed at the main venue (JLN stadium), the four practice grounds and the two five-star hotels the teams will stay at,” said a police officer directly involved in the security arrangements but not authorised to address the media.
