The price of petrol has been hiked by 13 paise per litre while that diesel has been raised by 15 paise per litre. With this, the petrol now costs Rs 74.21 a litre and diesel price touched an all-time high of Rs 65.46 per litre in Delhi.

Petrol prices in Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai as of Saturday (April 21) are Rs 76.91, Rs 76.99 and Rs 82.06, respectively.

As far as petrol prices are concerned, this is the highest it has touched since September 2013 when it was Rs 76.06 in Delhi.

Petrol prices were raised marginally by 1 paisa on Friday, while diesel prices went up by 4 paise. Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram had on Friday slammed the government over high fuel prices.

”Crude oil price at US $ 74 per barrel is still lower than US $ 105 four years ago. So, why are Petrol/Diesel prices higher today than they were in May 2014?’ he had tweeted.

‘For the last four years, the BJP government has lived off an oil bonanza. Minus the oil bonanza, the BJP government is clueless and floundering,’ Chidambaram’s another tweet said.

The petrol and diesel prices tend to fluctuate on a daily basis since the state-owned oil companies that include Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, in June last year had renounced the 15-year practice of revising rates on the fortnightly basis and adopted a daily prices revision system to reflect changes.
