Necessary Initiatives taken to Decongest Traffic in Delhi

New Delhi: The number of motor vehicles on Delhi Roads are growing and as a result, problem of traffic congestion and jam on roads is faced in several parts of Delhi.

The Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of total number of registered vehicles in Delhi has gone up by 4.4% over the last three yers from 2013 to 2015.  The total number of registered vehicles in Delhi for last three years is as under:-

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways is providing central assistance to State Road Transport Corporations for development of IT infrastructure to make the Public Transport System more sophisticated and comfortable and issued guidelines to promote and regulate sharing mobility. Construction of Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) and Western Peripheral Expressway (WPE) decongest Delhi and provide the hassle free movement of non- Delhi bound traffic from the neighbouring States

A High Powered Inter-Ministerial Committee on “Decongesting Traffic in Delhi” constituted by Ministry of Urban Development has recommended four-pronged strategic approach to improve the traffic condition in Delhi. These are:

(i)                 improving Public Transport and disincentivizing use of private vehicles;

(ii)               Road safety and Traffic management;

(iii)             Enhancing institutional capacity and

(iv)             Transit Oriented Development.

State and Union Territories and Urban Local Bodies are taking necessary initiatives including planning and execution of urban transport systems being the State subject in terms of Entry 13 of the State List of the Constitution of India.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Shri Pon. Radhakrishnan in written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.
