Jaitley takes oath as Rajya Sabha member

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who is undergoing treatment for a kidney ailment, on Sunday took oath as Rajya Sabha member for a new six-year term.

The 65-year-old minister, who could not take an oath when the budget session was on due to his health condition, was sworn in at a function at Rajya Sabha chairman M Venkaiah Naidu’s chamber.

“Took oath of office as Rajya Sabha Member representing Uttar Pradesh, April 15, 2018,” Jaitley said on Twitter.

He has been elected to the Rajya Sabha consecutively for the fourth term. He was elected to the Upper House of Parliament for the first time in April 2000, re-elected in April 2006 and again in April 2012 from Gujarat.

Union Ministers Ananth Kumar, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Prakash Javadekar, Piyush Goel, Hardeep S Puri, Vijay Goel and Shiv Pratap Shukla, along with the leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad, were among those present at the ceremony.

Rajya Sabha members Bhupender Yadav, Jagdambika Pal, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and former Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddyurappa were also present.

Jaitley, who has not visited his office in North Block since April 2, underwent dialysis at AIIMS on April 9. (DH)
